Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah is a stunning expanse of canyons, rock formations, and historic orchards. Its name comes from the distinctive white rock formations that resemble a capitol building’s dome, with the "reef" referring to the impassable cliffs that once posed challenges to early travelers. In the late 1800’s, Latter-day Saints established the settlement of Fruita in the heart of the park, where pioneers cultivated orchards which are still maintained today. In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Capitol Reef as a national monument, safeguarding its unique geological features and cultural significance. Today, the park invites visitors to explore its remote wilderness and rich history through hiking, camping, and glimpsing remnants of early pioneer life.
